Thanks for this. Very helpful. I’m curious what the challenges were re: riding public transit with your dog. We’re about to move to Europe and have 2 dogs and won’t have a car. Did you have bad experiences?

Hi Joy, I did have too many bad experiences on public transit with my dog/s, yes. My first dog was very old and sick and he couldn't stay in a crate for 9 hours of train travel. He would cry. It was awful. One time I was refused transportation with him even though I had purchased him an extra ticket and he could legally board the bus. Instead I had to sit and wait at the station for 6 hours and buy more tickets until someone finally let me on with him. And this was to go to a location a mere hour away.

The dog I have now is young and fearful.

In order to bring a dog on a bus or train in Portugal, they must be in a carrier. It's too much for me to carry a 25 lb dog in a carrier + a suitcase. I am close to 60 and small and alone and I just can't do it.

You can bring them on the metro here, on-leash without a carrier, which I have done but my dog is very scared of the metro and she gets quite upset.

So I got a car in order to travel with my dog. I understand it's not the right decision for everyone but it's what I had to do for my sanity and my dog's well being :)

It was also super easy and affordable to get a great car here!

I hope that helps :)

GREAT list!!! And it's totally true that everyone's lists will be a little different but breaking it down into the must haves, nice-to-haves and doesn't matters is SUCH a wonderful way to make this process a little less overwhelming!

I’m commenting on my own post because I wrote it last Monday after a 9.5 hour driving/travel day and didn’t see the typos. I’m still traveling but will fix them and update asap!! Can’t wait to write about my exciting adventure & experience at Nomad World! 🥰
