Hi Kimberly. Some time back I read an old article of yours where you said you wished you had moved to Spain. I can’t find it now, and I’d like to read it again. Link? Thanks.
Indeed. Portugal is much more lenient on time in country required for the first five years. But many parts of Spain seem more affordable, and you don’t need a year rental arranged in advance. That seems like a big deal when you don’t know where you want to land. But Portugal citizenship in half the time of Spain. But I already know a fair amount of Spanish. I think taxes are fairly comparable, but not certain. Flip flop, flip flop. 🙄 After being a nomad for 7 years, I now live in a great spot in a beautiful part of the bluest state in the country (Grass Valley, CA), but it’s a challenge financially. I don’t want to leave, but I feel compelled to continue research on leaving and where to go. As things continue going to hell in the U.S. Meanwhile, I’m 76 and not getting any younger. This shit was never on my bingo card! F*#k! I really thought the decision to leave would be a hell of a lot easier than it is.
Hi Rich, it's overwhelming, right? Could you rent out your house (if you own) and try 3 months in Portugal, 3 months in Albania or Bulgaria or Montenegro (for example to be 3 months out of the Schengen) and then another 3 months in Spain before you decide? Or 6 weeks in Spain and 6 weeks in Portugal?
At some point one needs to just "jump" and do it (or not). Especially as we get older and healthcare becomes unaffordable or just crappy. As my BFF pointed out today re: taxes here in Portugal "yeah but healthcare is guaranteed-cradle to grave here".
Hi Kristen! Thank you so much for your comment!!! Yes exactly!!! I mention that in the article, it’s much easier once in Europe. I’m so glad you’re able to travel with him or her. 🥰
Thanks so much for this info!! It's super generous and helpful.

Thank you!
That said, there are downsides as well. Positives and negatives to both. 😆

I love Grass Valley too...
Once I moved to Italy I got my dog an EU passport and now now more expensive paperwork when I travel. I did it thru a local vet here in Italy.
